February E.M.

The February Emergency Meeting was last Tuesday, with special first-time attendee Eva. Rebecca and I agree that everyone had one drink too many, which is the hallmark of a good E.M. Topics discussed included arm socks: home-knitted and not, goldfish: cheddar and not, and your shirt: cheap and not.

James M. x2

Am I the only one who confuses James Marsters and James Marsden? Whenever I see that James Marsden is in a movie (like "The Notebook," which I watched last weekend) I think excitedly "I didn't know that Spike from Buffy is in this movie!" And of course, I'm always disappointed. Luckily, they are both hot, so it's never disappointing for long.
In case you were wondering, "The Notebook" is so good in the flashback scenes, so unwatchable in the contemporary scenes. ET sez: rent and fast forward.

A suitable skim

I finally finished Vikram Seth's "A Suitable Boy" -- all 1349 pages of it. Well... I read the first 600 or so pages very carefully, my head spinning with all the characters and predicaments. Then I got mired in the sections about Indian politics and law and put it down. Then Priya told me I could skip over the boring stuff and get back to the family and love parts. Which speeded things up considerably.
Still, I was disappointed. Nothing very exciting happens until page 1185. Some, but not all, of the relationship stuff gets resolved (not, presumably, for lack of space), and the conclusion was unsatisfying. For a book that took me two months to read, I was hoping for a little more.
Next to read: US Magazine -- Grammy Gowns and Parties. Britney's Private Album! How's Jen Coping?

Once more, with feeling

Jenny, in her benevolence, lent me Season Six of Buffy. It is not the greatest season, but I had forgotten how fantastic the musical episode is. Joss Whedon is SO good, people. The songs in this episode are so fun, so clever, so necessary to the episode and the season. It is right up there with the best episodes ever: "Innocence," "Becoming 1&2," "Doppelgangland," "Graduation Day 1&2," "Hush," "Who are You," "The Body," "The Gift," etc.
Really, is there anything more beautiful on a TV screen than the words "Written and Directed by Joss Whedon"?

Arm socks in the news!

I couldn't have been happier when i picked up Saturday's San Francisco Chronicle. Not only were my dear friends Kyle and Christopher featured in an article on the anniversary of SF's short-lived gay marriage bonanza, the Chron ran the picture above, with Kyle wearing my arm socks! Finally, some respect from the media.
Other great moments in arm socks history:
1998 - Faith dusts a vampire outside The Bronze in black arm socks (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 3, Episode 3).
1999 -- Lance Armstrong begins his string of Tour de France victories, popularizing bike racing (and its arm warming accessories) with mainstream America.
2002 -- My pal Hunter meets Adam, the guy who used to sell our favorite arm socks over the internet, at a club in L.A. Talk about a celebrity sighting!

Don't dress your cat in an apron

Did you have "Free to Be You and Me" when you were growing up, or were you raised by wolves? The nicest human parents in the 70s gave their kids this record to learn the songs about non-sexist gender roles (it's better than it sounds). Mine went one step further and bought the sheet music, so I could sing them at the piano with my dad.
I found out last fall that Rebecca and Kyle are "Free to Be"-ers too (no wonder they turned out so great). I bought the sheet music on Ebay -- so worn it could be my old copy -- and we grabbed Brett and Christopher and headed over to Lo and Dick T's for dinner and sing-alongs. It was just like the old days, but even better with my pals around. Christopher was the star, reciting "Housework" almost by heart, in his best Carol Channing voice.
The other star of the evening was supposed to be my mom's famous Baked Alaska, another favorite from the 70s. But she forgot that their stove was broken and since there is no such thing as Microwaved Alaska, it was served as cake and ice cream. Not a bad substitution, but we're still hoping for another chance for the real thing.
Next up: teaching "Free to Be" to Isabel!

The namesake

Have you ever had someone named after you? If you haven't, I'd get right on it. It is awesome! Especially if he or she turns out to be the cutest, sweetest person you know. Isabel Emily gets back from vacation tomorrow... not a minute too soon.

Ich bin ein blogger
This is great and everything, but I am a little embarrassed to have a blog. It is one of those things I thought I'd never do, like get a cell phone (oops). Next thing you know I'll be wearing a poncho, doing Pilates, and knitting.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The new hello
Harold announced in December that "helllooooo" was not going to cut it for 2005. He decreed the new hello is "helLOW" -- which you should say with as much annoyance and irritation as possible. At first I was resistant, then resigned, and now I love it. So does Kyle! Jenny and Rebecca hate it, I'm not sure about Robyn and Nicole. The weird thing is that Harold doesn't seem to like it anymore... but if he thinks I'm stopping now, he is crazy.

Not a knitting blog
I don't know what kind of blog this is going to be, but I know what kind it isn't going to be.
Thanks Harold!
