Mark and Jen had their housewarming party on Saturday night, and it was fabulous for so many reasons: the choice selection of 80s dance music (live and recorded), the location of the dance floor (on the roof! and next to the barbeque, which kept the dancers both warm and fed all night), and especially the DIY photo booth.

And then there was 34

On Saturday night Ted and Naomi threw a fantastic dinner party to welcome me into my early mid-thirties. Most of the usual suspects were in attendance. I especially appreciated seeing Naomi (who sliced off the tip of her thumb earlier that afternoon, and left her place in line in the emergency room to come back and host the party) and Doug (who left his kid in Alameda for the night). Mark and Christopher's duds were deemed gay-friendly and Rebecca and Brett both won "How Vietnamese is your shirt?" Kyle came after work and batted clean-up on the leftovers. For some reason Reb, Brett, Kyle, Ted and I were the only ones who wanted to do push-ups after dinner.

Nicole continues to tantalize me with the prospect of homemade armsocks, but John gave me a most unusual gift -- jokes about Ted.

A priest, a rabbi and Ted walk into a bar. The priest orders a gin and tonic, the rabbi orders a whiskey on the rocks. Ted says, "Give me a seltzer in a can and make it snappy."

How many Teds does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Two -- one to screw it in and one to make a list of rules about it.

Decision: Prince

prince.jpg

Last night my Bike Coalition pals and I went to Cafe du Nord for a dance party called "Prince vs. Michael." I'm sure you can imagine it... lots of sweaty groove-shaking to a Prince song, then a Michael Jackson song, then a Prince song, etc. To answer your question, Sara, yes they played "Thriller," and no, it was nowhere near the scene in "13 Going on 30." Sadly.

We didn't stay until the end, so I don't know if there was any consensus on who "won." There are great songs on both sides, but Prince's side included his many rocking friends/proteges/lovers, like Morris Day and Vanity 6 and Sheila E. Michael doesn't seem to have many friends, esp. these days. Macauley Culkin and Elizabeth Taylor are great in their own way, but until they come out with dance remixes, Michael is standing alone. Decision: Prince.

New favorite holiday

Yesterday I celebrated Shrove Tuesday for the first time. It is a religious holiday in England on the day before Ash Wednesday -- an occasion when people in the olden days would use up the food (eggs, milk, fats) in their houses that they were going to give up for Lent. So the tradition of Shrove Tuesday, and the reason it is my new favorite holiday, is to eat lots of pancakes!

Since Mark didn't mention this holiday until a few days ago, and we didn't want to wait almost a whole year, we decided to celebrate the one-month anniversary of Shrove Tuesday. Mark made highly delicious English-style pancakes for Rebecca, Kyle, Christopher and me. English pancakes are like American pancakes, but thinner... you roll them up with lots of powdered sugar (lots and LOTS if you are Mark).

The other part of Pancake (I mean Shrove) Tuesday is that you're supposed to have pancake races. We didn't have time for that, but we did have a raffle. Lucky winner Kyle got a pack of whole wheat pita bread, courtesy of Ted and Naomi!

How's Jen coping?

brad&jen-2.jpg

Kyle and Rebecca and I, despite ourselves, have been following the break-up of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston in the pages of US Weekly. No angle has gone uncovered, no minutiae unexamined, so you can imagine how excited and appalled we were to find this new book advertised. We are counting on Librarian Nicole to score us an advance copy.

Que nadie deje a Baby en un rinconcito

God help me, I watched "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" last night. An insult to the original, which is one of my favorites. Do you remember the awesome scene in the first movie where the hipster staff kids get the stodgy hotel guests dancing to the extended remix of "I've Had the Time of My Life"? Nothing even close to that happens in this movie. To its credit, it stops being insanely predictable right at the end (the lead couple actually doesn't win the big dance contest). That's about the best thing I can say about it, though. I'm going to have to go watch some "Masterpiece Theater" to counteract the effects of this terrible movie. Crappy chick flicks: I watch them so you don't have to.
