Big Sister is watching over me

Recently Nicole and I were reminiscing about when we first met and realized that it was six years ago this month. A happy day for me -- she is a wonderful friend and over the years has introduced me to The Amazing Embarrassonics, homemade magnets, free yoga, Bad Movie Night, The Granada Cafe, and the movie "Our Song." I don't remember which of us suggested we put on our ballerina clothes and pirouette over to The Dance-Along Nutcracker at Yerba Buena Center (pictured below with Dr. Joe, a few months after he introduced us) -- but this photo is pretty classic.

Uncle Warren's wedding

There are a lot of things I could say about my Uncle Warren's wedding to Tiana on Saturday -- the beautiful setting on Mt. Tam, the delicious food afterwards at the Mountain Home Inn, how wonderful it was to see my family from all over the country, how much I like the bride and groom and how happy I think they will be together. But I can't help but focus on the fact that their wedding got a write-up in Sunday's New York Times!! Granted, it was not a "Vows" column, but it was one of the unions in the "Celebrations" section, and they got their bios and a picture printed. Looks like they've made it...

East Coast -- 2005

My two-week vacation was two weeks too short (at least). But it was nice to have some free time in SF, and then head off for my annual pilgrimage to New York City (and this time, Boston).

Trip highlights included: candlepin bowling with Heather and Sarah in Medford (it doesn't get more New England than that), drinking beer on Janet and Devin's porch in Somerville, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge with Cathy, biking to Brighton Beach with Josh, going to a funny Off-Broadway show in NoHo with Steve and Nhadine, reading the New York edition of The New York Times with Mao and Church, drinking fruity martinis with Emily H. in Cobble Hill, and drinking wine in a beer garden in Williamsburg with Sara.

The lowlights were the rainy weather in Boston and some subway frustrations in New York, but mostly I loved it and I miss my friends already. See you next year:

Brett's birthday

Brett, who doesn't age, has a party every year anyway. This year, there were two: "Bullitt" in Dolores Park on Saturday night, and bowling at Presidio Bowl on Sunday.

Piano six hands

After our family dinner last Monday, Isabel, Jonathan and Richard treated us to their rendition of "Parents are People." Three people playing one piano is hard on the ears, but easy on the eyes.

Jenny's 30th Birthday

Jenny is finally 30, and I'm happy to say I was along for the decadence. As a warm-up on Thursday, Harold treated Jenny and me to an afternoon at Tru Spa on Kearny Street, where we got massages and facials and drank champagne in our fluffy robes.

For the main event on Saturday, the Checks hired an enormous limousine and hosted me, Guenter, John, Jon, Meredith, Molly, Nicole, Robyn and Tracy for a fancy dinner at Le Colonial.

Living large was fun, but my favorite part of the weekend was watching cooking shows in Jenny and Harold's living room on Sunday morning -- just like old times. Happy Birthday Jenny!

Workin' it

paella-que.jpg

In honor of Labor Day Weekend, the theme yesterday seemed to be "working." Doug, Nik, Reb, Brett and I went over to Ted and Naomi's for a paella-que and impromptu "Working my Way Back to You Babe" dance party. Ted, Brett and I then continued on to the The Dark Room and met up with John and Nicole for Bad Movie Night, which featured an homage to the working women of Las Vegas -- "Showgirls." Afterwards we all had a new appreciation for our desk jobs, and for the fact that most movies are much, much better than that one.
