Hopelessly devoted to karaoke

For two or three years after "Grease" came out in 1978, I'm pretty sure I spent half my free time singing along to the movie soundtrack and the other half imagining what fabulous things would happen to me when the rest of America discovered that I could sing EXACTLY like Olivia Newton-John. Fame, fortune, travel, etc. Well, I debuted "Hopelessly Devoted to You" at The Mint last night and was rewarded with... polite applause. Hmmmm. After all these years, it was a little underwhelming.

Still, it was a wonderfully fun night and the bar was un-crowded enough that we all got to sing many times. The best songs were "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" (Jenny), "Our Love is Here to Stay" (Kyle), "Short People" (Harold), "Why" (Tim) and "The Greatest Love of All" (Tim's hilarious friends). The super-drunk girls sitting next to us loved every note.

I still think a little number from the stage classic "Show Boar" would have really made the evening complete.

I thought "hopelessly devoted" was a smashing success! There just weren't thunderous applause because the audience was sparse. I consider it a triumph.

I always say that I don't watch baseball unless the Giants are playing. Truth be told, I don't even watch the Giants, preferring instead the radio, so I can fix bikes or dinner or pretend I'm reading to my kid.

But I can't stop watching the baseball playoffs this year! I don't know many of the players, and am appalled that the pitchers don't hit in the American League, but the announcers do a great job making it seem much more exciting than it really is.

In yesterday's Sox game (go Sox!, and I'm not just kissing up to Pete), someone hit a pop fly foul that perfectly went into someone's beer and there was a huge splash. It was clear that the network had great footage of it. Although the announcers acknowledged the huge beer splash, they didn't show a replay. During the regular season, they would have show it a thousand times, and maybe have followed the wettest folks to the bathroom for an interview. I know not showing it was totally a ploy to make us think that the game was more exciting. But it worked!
