The Red Menace

Santas Hal and Holly.JPG Santas Hal and Emily.JPG

Last month, Hal and Holly (above left) convinced me that anyone who could have fun dressed as Lincoln in the company of 25 other Lincolns would really enjoy being a Santa among 250 other Santas. Of course they were right. On Saturday we suited up for Santarchy (aka Santacide, SantaCon) and painted the town... well, you know. We joined up with David G., Joe C. and Ted S. and ran into a bunch of other people we knew (mostly Bike Coalition types), made lots of new friends and witnessed behavior both naughty and nice. The festivities started at Zeitgeist (see below) and continued to a dance party in Dolores Park and bars in the Mission, Castro and Union Square. Light rain was no deterrent -- there were Santas everywhere I looked at all times. Seven hours of Santa-ing was enough for me, but I hear the hardcore revelers were spreading holiday cheer well into the wee hours.

My niece Isabel knows two things about Santa Claus: "Brings toys!" and "Not scary!" Luckily she missed all of the merriment on Saturday, because she would have had to change her mind on both counts.

Thanks H and H -- same time next year?

Holiday E.M.

Santa didn't show at last night's E.M., but we had a very nice turnout otherwise.

The season of giving

is also, it turns out, the season of taking. Yesterday, Jenny took me out to lunch at the Four Seasons, and I took her to a performance of Smuin Ballet's "The Christmas Ballet." Later, my parents took our family to dinner at Lulu. Take it from me, it was a perfect winter day.

Smuin's Christmas show is always a highlight of the holidays for me. The choreography is so creative, the execution so joyful. Pretty inspiring stuff -- in fact, after the show, Jenny and I were in San Francisco Center and I was inspired to re-create the "Santa Baby" dance in the middle of Victoria's Secret. I suggest seeing the real thing, at Yerba Buena through 12/23.

Legalize it

Between Jenny's party cupcakes and Rebecca's holiday cookies, I've been doing a lot of frosting lately. Thanks to Hal for alerting me to what must be the second oldest profession.
