Book club

alternatives_to_sex.jpgwhole world.jpg

Two books I've read, and loved, recently: Alternatives to Sex by Stephen McCauley and The Whole World Over by Julia Glass.

That'll be it from me for a few weeks -- I'm off to France until 9/9. Everyone watch Season 1 of "Weeds" when I'm gone so we can talk about how much we love it when I get back. Au revoir!

Bootielicious

My steak club guys have been talking about mash-ups for months, but it wasn't until Harold sent me to mashuptown that I truly understood the brilliance of the concept. Mash-ups are created when a DJ takes 2 more songs and -- you guessed it -- mashes them up. For example, "Superfreak"/"Girls on Film," "Control Myself"/"Funky Cold Medina," and "Beethoven's Fifth"/"A Fifth of Beethoven"/"Gold Digger." Ted says they sound like when the radio is stuck between 2 stations, but I like them.

On Friday night Steve, other Steve, Danny and I went to DNA for Bootie, a monthly mash-up dance party. It was their 3rd Anniversary Party, and the theme was "pirate's ball." I nodded to the theme with a bandanna on my head and small skull-and-crossbones tattoos, but Steve (above) went all out. My other favorite was the woman wearing a puffy shirt with a fake parrot perched on her shoulder. Shiver me timbers, why didn't I think of that?

I felt a little better at Amnesia last night, when I karaoked "You Give Love a Bad Name" accompanied by a guy on a cowbell.

You have to believe we are magic

xan-title.jpg

I spent most of this week in Toronto at a conference for performing arts administrators. I wasn't sure what to expect for my first business trip ever, but it was great. Learned a lot, met many cool people, ate up a storm. The best part, of course, was having my own hotel room! I don't think that's ever happened before, and it was heaven. I wasn't in it much, but just having it felt supremely decadent.

I returned last night and was home for exactly 5 minutes before I turned around and headed out the door for "Xanadu" in Dolores Park. The movie itself was utterly bizarre, outrageously nonsensical and often glorious. Watching it with Pam and Leah was ideal, as they are "Xanadu" fanatics, and love it unreservedly. My favorite moment was when I realized that, like Olivia Newton-John in every scene, I too was wearing legwarmers! Not as a tribute to 80s fashion, or with any kind of hipster irony, but because I was trying to stay warm. All I need now are short shorts, feathered hair, and, of course, roller skates. Then I'll be here, now that you're near, in Xanadu...

Floating over you

On Thursday Pam, Thom and I went to Oakland to float in sensory deprivation tanks. Random, right? It was pretty cool, quite relaxing, and kind of boring. Basically, just what I expected, though I was hoping for more. It cost $70 for an hour, so I'm sure I won't feel the need to do it again, but I'm glad I got to cross it off my list. It wasn't exactly on my list, but hey.

12 years and counting

12 years.jpg

Last night Reb and I celebrated our 12th anniversary at Manora Thai with special guests Brett and Ruby. Brett never remembers how we met, so we got to tell that old story again, pass the baby around, and eat lots of food, most of which was fried and therefore highly delicious.
