Bacon and Ballots

BaconSlate.jpg

Yesterday David G. invited fellow Bacon-ites Daniel, Hunter, Judith and myself to his place for "Pancakes and Politics." At this gathering, held before each election, we make brunch and decide how to vote. The group consensus on the various measures ranged from "Yes" and "Yes(ish)" to "Hells No" and "How did this get on the ballot?"

The food was delicious, the conversation thoughtful, and it's so nice to have my decisions made early. One more week and I will be one of those annoying people walking around with an "I voted" sticker acting superior all day.

Thanksgiving in October

BBQed%20Turkey.jpg

Last weekend Ania, Chris G., Ed, Emma, Jen, Leah, Mark, Matt, Michael P., Ted S. and I headed to the cabin for a weekend of pure laziness, crowned by a decadent early Thanksgiving dinner (because some of them are going to be out of the country for the real thing). Jen organized the dinner and cooked most of it, for which we were all very thankful!

Other highlights of the weekend were: four kinds of fried appetizers on the drive up (and no entrees), reading on the deck for hours amongst all the pine, cedar, and hemlock trees, getting an early invitation to cabin New Year's and an unprecedented 2+ hour game of "Hate or Date." The lowlight was the off-brand candy corn that looked like the good stuff, but wasn't. I think we all learned an important lesson from that.

Movin' right along

Kyle and I have found a new radio station to listen to in the afternoons, when The Vine is less about music and more about traffic and reality TV show reporting. Movin' 99.7 promises to "Make You Feel Good," and so far, I have no complaints.

The all-dance playlist is a mix of the classic (Prince, Deee-Lite, Madonna) and contemporary (Usher, Destiny's Child, Black Eyed Peas). What I appreciate most are the songs I haven't heard in years, the ones I had hoped to never hear again, but-okay-just-this-once-I-love-it songs. Like, um, "All 4 Love" by Color Me Badd and "Things That Make You Go Hmmmm..." by C+C Music Factory. I know, I know, but just this once.

Everything tastes better when you're camping

grilled%20s%27more.JPG

Though I have a feeling that the guacamole, quesadillas, fajitas, s'mores and cinnamon rolls that Amy, Andrea, Ania, Ed, Jed, Julie, Michael B., Michael P., Pam, Thom and I ate at Bummer Peak last weekend would have been pretty tasty anywhere, anytime.

It's a niece!

Kiko Taira was born yesterday afternoon. She is tiny and seems really sweet already. At one hour old she looked just like Isabel did at that age, which seems auspicious. I can't wait to get to know her. Ted and Naomi are doing well, and come home from the hospital on Thursday.

I love those cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling

panda%20cupcakes.jpg

On maternity leave waiting for my new niece or nephew, Naomi found time yesterday to make the cutest cupcakes for Rebecca's birthday party. As a cupcake connoisseur, I approved wholeheartedly.

Afterwards, Steak Club convened for an unprecedented second night in a row to celebrate Mac's visit, his recent marriage, and Little Mac, who will be born in January! After many margaritas at Velvet Cantina, we set out to create a sidewalk explosion of Diet Coke and Mentos, with unspectacular results all three times, much to the indifference/disdain of passersby.

Off the wall

billboard.jpg

On Sunday night Steve, Hal and I congregated at the corner of 24th and Mission to check out a free aerial dance performance. Flyaway Productions was premiering "The Live Billboard Project" right above the Chinese Food/Donuts place. It was supposedly a political statement condemning the media's objectification of women, but it just seemed like people dancing on wires and trapezes to really bad music to me. Despite the tunes, it was cool. Especially for free! 30 seconds YouTubed here.

Elsewhere in the arts, every hippie and her dog was at the otherwise outstanding Bluegrass Festival over the weekend, breasts were bared at Smuin Ballet's latest offering at the Palace of Fine Arts on Saturday, and names were dropped last night at the Litquake-themed Porchlight event at the Swedish American Hall. Kathi Kamen Goldmark told of enlisting hotel security to try to coax Hunter S. Thompson out of the Cliff House, Pat Montandon recounted her New York City adventures with lawyer-to-the-stars Melvin Belli, Marcus Ewert spared few details of his teenage tryst with William Burroughs, and Joyce Maynard referenced, much more discreetly, her romance with J.D. Salinger.

What a feeling

fd3.jpg

Saturday night David G., Hal, Steve, Gretchen and I boogied over to City Hall for 'Deep's 4th incarnation of Flashdance, his roving, semi-occasional outdoor dance party.

It. Was. So. Fun.

The best part was when 'Deep, who is usually resistant to requests, played "Crazy in Love" for me. Hopefully there will be another Flashdance before the rainy season starts in earnest.

Public service announcement: On Friday night, Stallion is going to be at 12 Galaxies for an encore performance of Fogstorm. I will be home having Emily Night but encourage all of you to go and Feel The Heat!
