Queue management, part 2

I'm doing it again -- moving certain movies down my Netflix queue, whenever they creep close to the top. If anyone wants to help me decide one way or another, I'd be obliged.

Strangers with Candy -- I love Amy Sedaris, but 91 mins. of Jerri Blank seems like a lot.

Ballets Russes -- I actually rented this one already, but after 10 uneventful minutes I turned it off and sent it back. Was not in a very forgiving mood then, and who's to say the next time will be any different? Still, it's supposed to be interesting.

Wah-Wah -- Could be good. Can't remember hearing anything about it. Not sure why I put in on my list.

An Inconvenient Truth -- Al Gore, in my living room? I probably should have seen this in the theater.

Dave Chappelle's Block Party -- The comedy part sounds good, the music part, not as good.

Happy Accidents -- There has to be a reason I've never heard of a romantic comedy starring reasonably acclaimed actors Marisa Tomei and Vincent D'Onofrio. The fact that D'Onofrio's role is that of a time traveler from 2470 could hint to the reason -- that it's terrible? Still, I can't seem to take it off my queue.

I only have two of those three (Chapelle and Inconvenient Truth). I would say skip over the music parts of Block Party and watch Al Gore when you have a TV comedy as a chaser.

On Al Gore, I can sum up: "Is global warming bad? It's sooo bad. Let me break it down like sixth grade science class. Oh, and have you met my family? We're nice."

I thought Block Party was a lot of fun. There's actually not a lot of great jokes, but everybody involved seems to be having such a good time putting the event together, and then when the concert happens the whole neighborhood/crowd is totally thrilled. Which might have been more palpable at the Parkway in Oakland than your living room (no offense to your living room). On the other hand, if there are bonus features with more footage of the marching band, you should totally invite me over and I'll be your peanut gallery/cheering section.

Happy Accidents is a charming and romantic movie mainly due to the charm of Vincent D'Onofrio's performance as the lead.
His character of Sam is both funny and goofingly endearing, yet believable despite the science fiction aspects of the film.
You don't really know for certain if he is a time traveler, or just a sweet, sexy guy with mental problems for 3/4 ths of the film, but by that time you don't care as he has completely captivated you.
Marisa Tomei is her usual whining neurotic and that takes away from the film, but I recommend that you watch it just to see Vincent D'Onofrio's character being freaked out by a tiny little dog yapping at him.
Vincent D'Onofrio is naturally funny in this movie. Is there any type of acting that he can't shine at?
Another interesting Indie movie is Household Saints. Vincent is at his sexy, romantic best in the early portion of this film, and he is totally believable playing the role of Joseph Santangelo-- something that cannot be said of a miscast Tracy Ullman as his wife and a Kabuki- weird performance by Lili Taylor as his daughter,Teresa, in the last portion of the movie. Still, I defy you not to fall for the character of Joseph Santangelo in this film! Warning: It is very hard to find a copy of this film and very expensive!

Re: Block Party: I second Nicole's vote. I just saw it and loved it. And that's not just because I was mere blocks (blocks!) from the party when it happened. I even bought the CD. However, if I had to guess about your viewing pleasures, my crystal ball would tell me that you will find yourself fast forwarding through some of the music parts. But they're all relatively short.

Re: Strangers With Candy: Amy is so cute (and her hositality book makes an excellent xmas gift)...and yet this movie kinda sucks. Should have stayed a 4 minute sketch.

I've got to vote with the Block Party block. It was the feel good movie of 2005. Seriously. Put it back on the top of the queue ... even if you don't dig hip hop. Perhaps it would be fun to watch Ballet Russes while listening to the soundtrack of Block Party. Either that or mash up Strangers with Candy with An Inconvenient Truth.
